We are pleased to release this year’s survey, marking the seventh year of these results. The first report covered the March 2016 to March 2018 financial years and included around 600 motel profit and loss statements. Over the past 10 years, the program sample has grown to more than 1,660 statements, including the latest March 2025 samples. This report presents results for the six financial years from March 2020 to March 2025, based on just over 880 samples. Charts covering the full 10-year period are available on request.
This report analyses data compiled from motel financial accounts to provide meaningful industry benchmarks for revenue and relative costs. The data is updated continuously, so the March 2025 sample size will keep increasing, along with earlier years, as more multi-year accounts are added. As a result, the most recent financial year will always have the fewest samples.
To confirm the accuracy of the data entry and analysis, the original survey was audited by chartered accountants PKF Goldsmith Fox Audit, whose findings are appended to this report. The auditor’s statement was completed in November 2020 using 513 annual samples. The data entry and analysis methods have remained unchanged.
The findings in this report are based on national data. The analysis can also be broken down by the North Island, South Island, regions, main centres, and specific towns or cities. Tailored reports are available, although more specific criteria will result in smaller sample sizes.
We focus on the main categories of greatest interest to the industry. Although results are available as both averages and medians, this report presents median findings. All relevant expense categories are included. Most are shown as a percentage of revenue, while expenses less affected by revenue and occupancy, such as rates and insurance, are shown on a cost-per-unit basis.
